This Week’s Viral Cure

TikTok’s cayenne paste has far more capsaicin than a pharmacy cream

498 OA patients tested capsaicin at measured doses in eight double-blind trials.

Creators are mixing two tablespoons of castor oil with a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, rubbing it on sore joints, and calling it a natural pain fix. Capsaicin, the heat compound in cayenne, has decades of OA trial data. The kitchen mix adds variables those trials never tested.

Have you rubbed a kitchen spice on a sore joint?

🌶️  Yes, cayenne or something similar 🧴  No, I use store-bought creams 🤔  I’ve thought about it

A molecule called substance P carries pain signals from a sore joint to the brain, and capsaicin depletes it from the nerve endings over repeated applications. A 2024 meta-analysis by Tshering et al. found topical capsaicin may reduce OA pain severity compared with placebo, though the certainty was rated low to very low because the studies were small, varied in methods, and often short. A 2014 review by Laslett and Jones, covering 1,162 patients, scored the pain-relief effect at a moderate 0.44.

Castor oil brings ricinoleic acid, its main fatty acid. Vieira et al. found anti-inflammatory effects in animal models in 2000, but only one small human joint trial of castor oil or ricinoleic acid exists. The dose gap matters more: ground cayenne runs about 0.25% capsaicinoids by weight, while a standard pharmacy cream contains 0.025%. In the Tshering review, capsaicin raised the risk of application-site burning 5.56 times over placebo (numbers needed to harm: 3), and those were controlled doses.

Skip the paste. Every trial that found a benefit used a pharmacy cream at a measured concentration, not a kitchen mix with no dose control.

Start with the lowest OTC strength. If you tolerate mild warming after a week, you can step up to 0.075% or 0.1%. Keep capsaicin away from broken skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, and skip any joint with an open cut.

This Is How Your Drinking Water Speeds Up Memory Loss By 50%

Scientists at the University of New Mexico just made a shocking discovery:

Inside the water you drink every single day, there are invisible toxic shards silently building up inside your brain…

Strangling your brain cells like a snake…

Crushing the connections that keep your memory sharp…

And speeding up memory loss by 50% every 8 years.

✅ The $10 Swap

Buy the pharmacy version. A 0.025% capsaicin cream costs about $10 to $15 at most drugstores. Rub a pea-sized amount into one stiff or sore joint until absorbed. Wash hands with soap and water right after. Repeat 3 to 4 times daily. Initial warming is normal and typically settles within a week. Give it at least 2 weeks of consistent use before judging.

More Joint Wins
● Patch test first. Apply a fingertip-sized dab of capsaicin cream to the inside of your forearm, wait 24 hours, and proceed to the sore joint if no blistering or excessive irritation appears.
● Try plain castor oil on its own. Without the cayenne, there is no capsaicin burn risk. Massage a coin-sized amount into a stiff joint for 2 minutes before bed tonight.
● Hot, red, and swollen is a different problem. A joint that is warm and swollen with no clear injury needs same-day medical evaluation. Skip the cream and call your doctor today.

From the Mailbag

“I started a capsaicin cream four days ago and the burning is still there. Should I stop?”

In Altman’s 1994 trial, 113 OA patients applied capsaicin cream or a placebo four times daily for 12 weeks. By the end, only 7% still reported burning. Give yours a full week of consistent use. If you develop blistering, a rash, or swelling beyond mild warmth, stop, rinse the area with cool water, and see a clinician.

P.S. Set phone alarms at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime so you do not miss any of the four daily capsaicin applications. Even spacing keeps each dose about four to five hours apart.
