This Week’s Viral Cure

TikTok’s “inflammation juice” has one controlled joint trial behind it

In 58 OA patients, two glasses a day for six weeks lowered CRP, a marker of inflammation.

Tart cherry juice keeps appearing on TikTok as a one-glass fix for stiff, inflamed joints. Montmorency cherries contain anthocyanins, pigments that inhibit the COX-2 enzyme, one of the same targets as ibuprofen. The strongest evidence comes from a 2013 randomized, double-blind crossover published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage.

How’s your morning joint stiffness?

🙂  Fine in minutes 😕  Takes a while 😢  Stiff past breakfast

Schumacher and colleagues gave 58 patients with mild-to-moderate OA 8 ounces of a Montmorency tart cherry juice blend, or a color-matched placebo, twice a day for six weeks, then crossed them over. WOMAC scores fell significantly inside the cherry group. Inside the placebo group, they did not (P = 0.46). But the head-to-head comparison between treatments did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.16).

High-sensitivity CRP, a blood marker of systemic inflammation, declined during the cherry phase versus placebo (P < 0.01). The size of that CRP decline was associated with WOMAC improvement. Patients whose inflammation dropped the most reported the most relief.

60+ mg
anthocyanins per day (trial dose)
35 g
sugar per 8-oz glass

A separate randomized trial in healthy adults found tart cherry extract cut CRP by 23% and urate by 37% versus placebo. A smaller pilot of 20 women with OA showed a CRP drop in the cherry group, but only after one statistical outlier was removed. Across studies, the inflammation signal is consistent. Pain improvement appears inside cherry groups but has not been confirmed in a trial large enough to detect a moderate effect.

Watch the sugar. The trial dose was two 8-ounce glasses a day: about 280 calories and 70 grams of sugar, more than a 12-oz can of Coca-Cola. If you manage blood glucose or count calories, tart cherry extract capsules deliver anthocyanins without the glucose load. Look for a capsule that lists its anthocyanin content in milligrams on the label.

✅ The 21-Day Test

Score your morning stiffness 1 to 10 today. Buy one bottle of Montmorency tart cherry juice blend. Drink 8 ounces twice a day for at least 21 days. Score your stiffness again on day 21. A drop of 2 or more points is worth noticing. No change after three weeks means the juice is not helping your joints enough to justify the sugar.

● Dilute to cut the sugar. Mix 8 to 12 ounces of tart cherry juice with water to match the dose used in recovery trials. Start there.
● Start it days before your walk. Multiple exercise-recovery trials gave cherry juice in the days surrounding a workout and measured less soreness. Start drinking your glass several days before your activity.
● Check your medications first. Tart cherry may enhance the effect of blood thinners. If you take warfarin or another anticoagulant, clear daily cherry juice with your doctor before you start.

Would you try tart cherry juice for two weeks?

“I already take turmeric for my joints. Can I add tart cherry juice on top of it?”

Patricia, 62

Curcumin and tart cherry anthocyanins work on overlapping but not identical inflammation pathways, so in principle they can combine. No published trial has tested the two together. The practical concern is stomach upset: both can irritate the gut. Start the cherry juice alone for two weeks. If your stomach handles it, add it alongside your turmeric. If you take blood thinners, clear both with your doctor, because each may amplify the anticoagulant effect.

P.S. No need to shake the bottle. Anthocyanins are water-soluble and stay mixed in the liquid, so the first unshaken glass from a new bottle holds the same amount of the active compound as the last.
